Our pregnant foster cat, Toni, had her kittens! Babies 1-4 were born in part 1. Please check out Part 2 to see the birth of babies #5 & #6! Are you ready for a birth story?! Warning, This will take the place of my blog post so it will be long!
We had been letting Toni out of the bathroom and letting her roam around in the master bedroom for a couple hours a day. Late that Monday night, we let her out as usual and went back in shortly after to clean her foster room, the master bath. We immediately heard kittens meowing and knew we were having babies!
She had gone behind a small couch and had already given birth to the first 2 kittens. Our little family worked together to get towels, the bed, etc and got started. There was blood, fluid and placenta on the floor so I donned gloves as I started cleaning. My daughter held the camera for me as I carefully moved Toni and her 2 kittens into the bed of clean towels. I should note here that, especially with cats that have just given birth, we often use towels that are already stained or have bleach spots. If you ever see our foster cats on a dirty towel it either means that it’s just stained or I am going to change the bedding after I take the picture or video of whatever they’re doing. Back to the birth. It can be tricky moving a mother cats newborns. If she doesn’t trust you or if she’s just really protective, she could decide to keep moving the babies or, more rarely, reject them. However, you have to make sure they are in a safe place and Toni’s babies could have gotten stuck under the tiny edge of this couch and she wouldn’t have been able to get them out by herself. She and her litter needed to be moved.
Once I got them moved, it took us a minute to get her settled. We really thought Toni had another couple weeks before she delivered. She had started sleeping with me in our bed. She would lay curved into my side with her head in the crook of my elbow and my hand rubbing her belly. She LOVES her belly rubbed! That last night, with my hand on her belly for a couple hours, I could feel her babies moving. It was such a sweet moment and I’ll treasure it always. Yes, I’m sappy. Even with the movement of her babies, she was still very small and didn’t look like she was about to pop, by any means. So we were not quite prepared when all this went down. Some litter was spilled in the bathroom floor, her box hadn’t been scooped in a couple hours and there were some spots of blood and fluid from her going into labor that we didn’t have time to clean up. This is why you will see a mess near the litter box. I promise, that’s not typical and it all got cleaned up after everyone was born and settled in.
Once we had her situated in the bathroom we didn’t have to wait long for baby #3 to be born. Toni did really well and had a pretty smooth labor. When she started having contractions for each delivery, she would just barely cry out and would have the baby out in a few quick moments. I wedged myself into the corner of the bathroom with a little stool, the cameras, my laptop and something to drink. This is were I stayed for most of the next 5 hours. I finally left to get something to eat and my husband stayed with her while I was out of the room. We let her know we were there for her and rubbed her belly all night. This was really relaxing for her! I included a lot of the wait time in the videos. You can see her cleaning and loving on the babies, the kittens nursing and even see the unborn babies moving inside her belly!
Once the 6th baby was born and we were fairly positive that it was the last one, I got clean towels & blankets and changed their bedding. Toni let me move the babies -while carefully watching them the whole time!- and she truly seemed thankful for the help, for the love. The next few days consisted of checking on them several times a day, loving on Mama, changing food & water, changing bedding. We try not to mess with the newborns a lot and just let Mama do her thing. They are doing great!
