Australian car manufacturing boomed in the 1960’s and 70’s, but after the oil shock and the floating of the dollar, an increasingly globalised world presented major challenges.
In part 2 of this 1986 documentary on the car industry, Justin Murphy examined the efforts to make the Australian industry more efficient and competitive. Competitiveness wasn’t just a problem for Australia, but also for Detroit, where the US industry was turning to CAD/CAM (computer aided design and manufacture) in order to match the efficiency of Japanese producers.
In Australia, the challenge had always been the relatively low volumes of production, making it difficult to achieve the necessary economies of scale. The Button car plan proposed to consolidate the industry, reducing both the number of manufacturers and the number of models produced. The goal was for the industry to become competitive enough to survive without the protection of tariffs and import restrictions.
What is remarkable, viewing this story almost 3 decades after it was made, is how many of the arguments were repeated almost exactly in early 2014, when the last Australian manufacturer announced it would cease making cars….
